With 4321, Auster makes his declaration of love to literature and to the artist as a young man, and to the craftsmanship of writing, and because of that it sounds almost as a biography. It is also a declaration in favor of tolerance over all (in times of "us against them," it is not a bad thing to remember what the world has already gone through to become less savage.)

4321 narrates four versions of one young man’s life, how it might have differed given small altered circumstances. This wore me down. Instead of becoming more engaged I was exasperated by it at about pg 700. I kept thinking I could have read three novels in the time it took me to wade through this.
